One of the biggest hurdles to starting a racing career is money, according to Lyle Anderson. Most professional drivers come from wealthy families, but Anderson and his team have had to scrape together money for his races. In order to drive in the Daytona Beach 14-hour race, Anderson had to pay an entry fee, which was approximately $2,000. Anderson said he had to acquire spare ties, spare brakes, a spare clutch and other backup parts for his car in case something went wrong during the race. He also had to pay for racing gear to wear, which Anderson said also cost approximately $2,000.
Anderson said when factoring in those expenses, hotel rooms, food, gas, transport costs and other day-to-day expenses, the entire race cost approximately $16,000.
Anderson knows that paying for race expenses likely won't get easier for a while. But when he finishes as well as he did at Daytona, it all becomes worth it.
Anderson signed a sponsorship deal with NEPTN (pronounced "Neptune"), a bracelet company based in Miami. The company's website says Neptune was chosen as its brand name because the Roman sea god stands as a symbol of freedom, of living in the present moment.
It's akin to how Anderson feels behind the wheel: free.
